Shahriar Nabili

One of a very few Eye Surgeons in Scotland to have access and expertise to perform Laser Cataract Surgery

I am a senior consultant ophthalmologist and the previous lead clinician for ophthalmology division of NHS Lanarkshire. I have been working as an eye surgeon for 23 years and have been a NHS consultant eye surgeon in NHS Lanarkshire for more than 13 years.

I am a senior lecturer in Glasgow Caledonian university vision centre. I have published papers in peer reviewed journals and am involved in the training and examining of medical students, opticians and ophthalmic trainees.

I graduated from University of Glasgow medical school in 1997. I completed my basic and higher surgical training in the West of Scotland Hospitals. The majority of my training was based in the Tennent Institute of Ophthalmology, Gartnavel General Hospital, Glasgow where I also completed 2 further fellowships.

I specialise in cataract, natural lens replacement and eye lid surgery. I have performed over 16000 cases of cataract and laser eye surgery. I am particularly interested and experienced in Multifocal Lens Implantation to achieve spectacle independence following cataract surgery. I am one of the very few eye surgeons in Scotland who has the training and access to Laser Cataract Surgery.

I am a friendly local experienced NHS surgeon who treats all of his patients with great respect and dignity. All my patients are given my own direct phone number after surgery. I believe that private cataract surgery with a consultant of your choice should also be affordable and accessible to as many patients as possible. I work with all major insurance companies and have affordable payment schemes for self funding patients.

I audit all my surgical outcomes regularly and in my latest ongoing audit of 200 cases, we achieved 100% patient satisfaction. I regularly perform surgery on complex cataracts and despite that, my surgical complication rate is well below national average.

I am an active member of various affiliated bodies and societies such as the Royal College of Ophthalmologists and Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

I am the founder and lead surgeon for Oculoplastic and Orbital services, including eye and eyelid trauma, in Lanarkshire health board. I supervise junior doctors of all grades.

“If you are thinking of having cataract surgery please think about going private and avoid waiting lists. I have just had surgery carried out on both eyes and the difference is unbelievable. I attended Ross Hall eye centre and had my surgery done one week apart. The dedication of all the staff was excellent and the follow up excellent. Doctor Nabili even phoned me at home the day after my surgery to ask how I was getting on. As a very apprehensive patient, I was put at ease by staff.

In conclusion I can now see without glasses for the first time in 30 years. Just do it”.

“I chose the multi focal tonic lenses when my cataracts were near the limit for driving. The operation was to my surprise pain free and took only fifteen minutes. Within a day my sight was virtually fully transformed and after six weeks the healing process is complete. I had no idea how life changing these lenses would be and would recommend them over standard lenses every time if possible. I now have 20 20 vision and have no need for glasses for the first time in thirty years. My night vision is very good with only very slight rings sometimes visible around strong lights such as headlights”.

“I have had recent surgery to have cataracts removed from both eye and everyone in the unit made me feel very comfortable and Dr Nabili did an excellent job and I can honestly say I felt very little discomfort during and after the operation and can ow read and watch T.V with no glasses. It is amazing and I would just like to say a big thank you to everyone in the Scottish Eye Unit”.
